Gert Cruywagen spread the message of Risk Management in new and innovative ways:

He did so
with his presentations and book titled “Jungle Risk Management: Risk lessons from the African Bush – How animals in the African Bush manage their risks and the lessons Businesses can learn from it”
·
He delivered key note presentations on this “Jungle Risk” topic at RIMS (USA) in San Diego; CRIMS (Canada) in Toronto; Swedish Business Insurance in Stockholm; PolRisk (Poland) in Warsaw; Rusrisk (Russia) in Moscow; and CICA (USA) in Indian Wells.

He delivered the same presentation at numerous smaller conferences and company events and sold more than 6000 copies of the books.

Gert contributed to the Risk Management Industry on an ongoing basis:

hrough facilitating the formation of the Polish Risk Management Association in Warsaw, Poland (PolRisk), becoming a founder member of PolRisk, he was elected as the very first Honorary Member of PolRisk.

He was invited to speak at the FERMA conference in Prague.
· He
was Invited by the Spencer Educational Foundation (USA) to present a series of risk management lectures at Illinois State University in the USA as “Risk Manager in Residence” – the first international risk manager to do this.

He made specific contributions to Risk Management Industry in the following ways:

Member of King Committee on Corporate Governance representing the risk industry.
·
Convener of Risk Governance Workgroup for the Third King Report on Corporate Governance (King 3) and principle author of the chapter “The Governance of Risk”..
·
Chairperson of the Risk Committee of the City of Johannesburg, the winner of the 2008 IRMSA award for best Government Risk Management Initiative.

Gert Cruywagen increased the status and profile of the Risk Management Discipline in the following ways:

Appointed as Independent non-executive director (with risk governance brief) of a number of companies, including Denel, the state-owned aerospace and defence contractor.

Gert has shown outstanding Risk Management creativity and expertise:

By the restructure and relocation of his previous employer’s captive insurance company to Stockholm, Sweden from Guernsey. Through
innovative use of cedes and Default Swaps the need for capital in the captive was completely removed. More than US$ 80 million was released back to the Group. It was the first non Swedish-owned captive in Stockholm.
·
Developed an innovative way to calculate and demonstrate the criticality of risk exposures. This methodology assists in the motivation of risk control measures as it is able to show the risk criticality (in figures and in colours) before and after the implementation of the risk measures. It also shows insurers the extent of improvements in the risk profiles.
