Students from Olivet College, Saint Mary’s University and Temple University will compete for cash prizes and present at the CICA 2023 International Conference.

MINNEAPOLIS ─ JAN. 11, 2023 ─ The Captive Insurance Companies Association (CICA) today announced the three finalist teams in its Captive Insurance Solutions for Today’s Risk Management Challenges essay contest for college risk management and insurance students, sponsored by Hylant Global Captive Solutions (Hylant GCS).

The three finalist teams are:

  • Carter Cappon and Chase Mendham, Olivet College
  • Olivia Faulkner and Zane Smith, Saint Mary’s University
  • Ting-Wei Liu and Nachapol Charamornburapong, Temple University

For the CICA essay contest, two-person teams were asked to describe how and why a captive insurance company could be used as a cost-effective means of alternative risk financing for new and growing risk challenges. The three finalist teams will now work with mentors from Hylant GCS to revise and enhance their essays, which will be judged again to determine first, second and third place.

Our hope is that our student participants will pursue their interest by working in the captive industry and we are seeing that happen.”

Dan Towle, CICA President

Now in its fifth year, the CICA College Student Essay Contest has established a reputation as a “fun and challenging” opportunity. “Each year our finalists tell us that participating in the contest helped them see how innovative and challenging the captive insurance industry is,” says CICA President Dan Towle. “Our hope is that our student participants will pursue their interest by working in the captive industry and we are seeing that happen. In 2022, two of our essay finalists accepted job offers with captive organizations as a result of presenting their essays at the CICA Conference,” Dan Towle added.

“Today’s students are looking at more than their first job. They’re looking at future opportunities as well. The case studies our team developed for the CICA essay contest are based on real issues organizations are facing. They help students learn about opportunities for using captive insurance and for careers that will grow as the captive industry grows,” says Anne Marie Towle, CEO, global captive solutions division, Hylant.

Winners will be announced at the Monday morning general session during the CICA International Conference March 5-7 in Rancho Mirage, California. The finalist teams will also present their case studies during an education session. Registration information and full conference details are on the CICA website.

After the Conference, student essays will also be published by CICA’s Essay Contest Media Partner Captive Insurance Times.
