How important is mentorship (or reverse mentorship) for your career or the careers of others?

I think mentorship, especially in a market as niche as captive insurance, is extremely important. It is a relatively small community and having someone (or multiple people) that you can lean on for guidance and information can really help your career grow. I also think that having cross-profession mentors (for example, a captive manager mentoring a newer hire at a captive owner) creates unique opportunities for professional development.

What drew you to the captive space?

I actually ended up stumbling into the captive space. When I joined Milliman as an actuarial analyst, I happened to join a group that focused on the captive and alternative risk market. As I learned more about the captive space (including how captives are used by various types of entities to solve the business problems they face), I decided it was an area where I could see my career developing.

What do you like most about the insurance industry/the captive niche?

I really like the fact that we help captive owners tackle problems that they are currently facing. The most interesting projects that I have been involved in usually relate to new captive formations or unique lines of coverage being added to an existing program. The ability of a captive insurer (and owner) to be dynamic helps keep the work we do exciting.
